Tips to Alleviate Acid Reflux
|
Limit beverages during meals.
If you suffer from GERD, limit your fluid intake with meals. Liquids
add to the volume of food in your stomach and increases stomach
distension. A full belly puts more pressure on the lower esophageal
sphincter (LES), the muscle that normally prevents food from moving
back up into your esophagus, and thus adds to your risk of reflux. To
minimize stomach volume, take small sips of water while you eat, and
try to drink mostly between rather than during meals.
|
Quit smoking.
Need another reason to give up cigarettes? Smoking increases your
risk for GERD! Smoking slows digestion and increases stomach acid, while it
also limits salvia production — your body's natural defense against stomach
acid! Besides harming your esophagus, cigarette smoke also damages the
digestive system and weakens your stomach's LES muscle, which directly causes
acid reflux.
Chew cinnamon gum after meals.
Chewing gum stimulates saliva production, which helps to neutralize
stomach acid. Gum chewing also encourages frequent swallowing, which clears
irritating acid from the esophagus more quickly. Just make sure to choose
non-mint flavors, since peppermint and spearmint can relax the LES and
exacerbate symptoms. Pick up cinnamon or fruit flavors instead.
Wear loose fitting clothing.
Avoid anything tight around your middle, which can put
pressure on your stomach and worsen the discomfort and pain of GERD. Until
your symptoms are under control, think stretchy and comfortable!
Don't lie down after eating.
If you're prone to acid reflux, it's important that you don't
lie flat for a minimum of two hours after you've eaten a meal or snack. In
fact, stand up and walk around to help encourage the gastric juices to flow in
the right direction. For the same reason, while sleeping, keep your upper body
elevated by placing a few books or a foam wedge underneath the mattress or
propping up the legs at the head of the bed with blocks or books.
Watch out for potential trigger foods.
When it comes to your diet, eating smaller meals is by far the
most important step you can take to prevent reflux, more so than changing the
foods you eat. That said, there are specific foods that can aggravate symptoms
in certain individuals. The most common culprits are fried or fatty foods,
alcohol, caffeinated beverages like coffee and tea, chocolate, mints and
mint-flavored items, citrus juices and fruits, tomatoes and tomato sauce,
spicy foods, onions, garlic, and carbonated beverages. Everyone has different
triggers, though, so if you find that these foods don't cause you any
discomfort, you can continue to enjoy them.
Cut the fat.
Lay off the chicken wings, fried foods, deep-dish pizza, and
fatty steak. High-fat meals like these relax the LES and delay stomach
emptying, making it more likely that you'll experience reflux. Instead, make
lean proteins (like skinless poultry, seafood, beans, and lean cuts of red
meat) and fiber-rich produce and whole grains your diet staples.
Limit beverages during meals.
If you suffer from GERD, limit your fluid intake with meals. Liquids
add to the volume of food in your stomach and increases stomach distension. A
full belly puts more pressure on the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), the
muscle that normally prevents food from moving back up into your esophagus,
and thus adds to your risk of reflux. To minimize stomach volume, take small
sips of water while you eat, and try to drink mostly between rather than
during meals
Relax and eat your food slowly.
Instead of eating a lot at one sitting, which can make acid-reflux
symptoms worse, eat only until you're comfortably full (versus overly
stuffed). Be sure to sit down and take your time during a meal; strive to
truly taste and enjoy each mouthful. One tried-and-true trick to eating more
slowly is to put down your fork on the table between every few bites

Watch Out for These Warning Signs
Even a small problem may be a symptom of a more serious disease or illness.
The following symptoms can indicate men's health risks you should have checked
out.
According to a survey by the American Academy of Family Physicians, 38 percent
of men go to the doctor only when they’re extremely sick or when symptoms
don’t go away on their own. But feeling healthy isn’t the same as
being
healthy, and waiting around for problems to get better with time could lead to
complications or late diagnoses.
Men interested in protecting their well-being
need to be vigilant about symptoms that could indicate potential health
conditions. A warning sign can be subtle and present for some time before you
take note of it. Or it can be immediate, painful, and worrisome. In either
case, if you experience any of the following symptoms, see your doctor so you
can get an evaluation of your health risk.
Chest Pain
Most people associate chest pain with a
heart attack,
but it could be caused by a different health condition. You could have
another type of heart problem, like angina, or a lung condition such as
pneumonia, a pulmonary embolism, or asthma. Or it might be a
gastrointestinal health condition such as acid reflux or a stomach
ulcer. All of these need a doctor's attention.
Bloody Urine
Blood in your urine is a cause for concern, particularly
if it is plentiful enough that you can see it with your naked eye.
Bloody urine is a prime symptom of prostate cancer or an
enlarged prostate.
It could also be due to either
cancer or
stones in your bladder or kidney. Kidney disease or injury can cause
bloody urine as can inflammation or infection of the bladder, kidney, or
urethra.
,
Shortness of Breath
Shortness of breath is another symptom that can mean any number of
things when it comes to
men's health. It can signal a heart
attack or congestive heart failure. Or you might have a lung disease
such as lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD),
chronic bronchitis, emphysema, asthma, or pulmonary hypertension.
Shortness of breath also is a symptom associated with anemia.
Hair Loss
Hair loss is
a common concern of middle-aged men. Men recovering from a major
surgery or illness may temporarily lose their hair, as can men under
severe emotional stress. While it is a natural part of aging, hair
loss also can also serve as a warning for a more serious men's health
condition, such as an autoimmune disease like lupus, infectious
diseases like syphilis, thyroid disease, or ringworm
Fatigue
Fatigue involves an ongoing lack of energy and motivation
and is a normal response to circumstances such as
stress,
physical exertion, or lack of sleep. However, fatigue also can be a
symptom of a more serious physical or psychological health condition.
Illnesses linked to fatigue include cancer, congestive heart failure,
diabetes, arthritis, infections, and kidney or liver disease. Fatigue
also can be part of health problems like anemia, depression, sleep
disorders, or a malfunctioning thyroid gland.
Dizziness
Dizziness can cause you to feel light-headed, become
unsteady on your feet, or experience the sensation that the room is
spinning around you. Dizziness occurs when there is not enough blood
reaching the brain. It can result from a sudden drop in blood pressure
or dehydration. Dizziness often accompanies health problems like the
flu, allergies, or hypoglycemia. It also can indicate a serious health
risk like
heart disease,
stroke, or shock.
Excessive Thirst
Every man should drink lots of water to maintain his health. However,
excessive thirst can be a clue that you have a health condition. It is a
prominent symptom of hyperglycemia and therefore is a big clue that you
might have
diabetes. Excessive thirst also is an
indication of possible internal bleeding, severe infection, or a failure
of the heart, liver, or kidneys
Memory Loss
Memory loss
involves more than just forgetting where you put your keys. It's a
health condition characterized by a level of continued and unusual
forgetfulness. Aging creates a certain low-level amount of memory loss,
but dramatic memory loss often indicates a disease at work. Health risks
associated with memory loss include
Alzheimer's disease,
brain tumors, brain infections, brain damage, depression, encephalitis,
stroke, and alcoholism. Certain vitamin deficiencies also can bring on
memory loss.
Vision Problems
Vision
naturally deteriorates as we grow older, starting most often in
middle age. However, problems like blurry vision, blind spots,
halos around lights, and tunnel vision can indicate a serious eye
condition. You could be experiencing vision problems caused by an
eye disease like cataracts, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy,
retinal detachment, or macular degeneration. Or it could indicate
a health problem such as a migraine, a stroke, or a brain tumor.
Regular eye check-ups are an important step in heading off these
health conditions.

The Cholesterol-Friendly Guide
to Cooking Oils
Olive oil is just one of many cooking oils you can include in a
heart-healthy diet when you're fighting high cholesterol. Learn your other
options.
You don’t have to give up cooking oils when you’re struggling with
high cholesterol. In fact, cooking with liquid
vegetable oils lets you sidestep the saturated fats found in solids like
butter and lard. Cooking oils work as part of
heart-healthy diets because they contain mostly unsaturated fats which
don’t contribute to high cholesterol, stroke, or heart disease.
"All vegetable oils, with the possible exception of coconut oil, are good
for fighting high cholesterol as part of a heart-healthy diet,” says Joy
Bauer, MS, RD, nutrition and health expert for the Today show and
best-selling author. Other exceptions include palm oil and palm kernel oil,
which are high in unhealthy fats.
While people often turn to olive oil first, there are actually many cooking
oils on supermarket shelves, some of which can naturally enhance heart health.
“Identifying these oils and using them in place of oils that don’t promote
heart health can go a long way in heart disease prevention," says Kari Kooi,
MS, RD, clinical dietitian specialist at the Methodist Hospital in Houston.
Start With Olive Oil
A recent study in the journal Neurology found that older people
who included lots of olive oil in their diets had a 41 percent lower risk of
stroke than people who didn’t use olive oil. In
fact, olive oil has been shown to lower bad cholesterol and increase good
cholesterol, and it’s loaded with antioxidants that are good for heart health.
But don’t overdo it, Bauer warns. "Olive oil is good for high cholesterol but
does have lots of calories (this is true for all oils), so you will be
defeating the purpose if you use too much."
There are two types of olive oil:
- Extra-virgin. Extra-virgin olive oils, made from the
first pressing of the olives, have been graded highest for aroma and flavor.
They are more expensive, so you may want to use them sparingly.
"Extra-virgin olive oils are best used for sautéing and drizzling over fresh
or roasted vegetables," says Kooi.
- Regular. "Regular olive oil is just as good for cooking
as extra-virgin, but all olive oils smoke at high heat,” says Bauer. Heating
any cooking oil beyond its smoke point ruins its benefits. Also, because of
its marked flavor, olive oil isn’t a good choice for baking, Bauer adds.
Basic Cooking Oils: Grapeseed, Canola, Peanut, and Corn
These cooking oils are all interchangeable and great, all-purpose oils.
“They are good for baking because they have a neutral flavor," says Bauer.
Here are the specifics:
- Grapeseed oil is high in omega-6 fatty acids and has
only 10 percent saturated fat. This cooking oil smokes at medium-high heat
and can be used for stir-frying. Omega-6 fatty acids and omega-3 fatty acids
work together in a heart-healthy diet to lower high cholesterol.
- Canola oil contains low levels of omega-3 fatty acids
and has only 7 percent saturated fat.
- Peanut oil is great for high-temperature cooking like
stir-frying, “because of its high smoke point,” says Kooi. “Many of the
peanut oils on the market have been chemically processed to have a mild
flavor. Look for kind labeled 'roasted' or 'toasted,' and toss with roasted
vegetables or drizzle over grilled seafood.”
- Corn oil has a lower smoke point than the others but is
high in omega-6 fatty acids. Corn oil is best for light sautéing and
low-heat baking.
Most people get too many omega-6 fatty acids compared to omega-3 fatty
acids — the ideal ratio is about two to four times less omega-6 than omega-3.
A typical diet includes 14 to 25 times more omega-6 fatty acids than omega-3
fatty acids. If you elect to use oils containing omega-6 fatty acids, try to
balance it out by eating plenty of seafood, which
contains omega-3 fatty acids.
Specialty Cooking Oils: Flaxseed, Sunflower, and Avocado
Here are a few of the many other oils you might want to try when preparing
your next meal:
- Flaxseed oil is a nutty-tasting oil rich with omega-3
fatty acids. Kooi doesn’t recommend it for cooking with heat but suggests
drizzling it over salad instead.
- Sunflower oil is a great specialty cooking oils for
someone on a heart-healthy diet because it has a high smoke point. It is one
of the few oils you can use for searing, browning, and deep-frying.
- Avocado oil is a light-tasting oil that comes from the
flesh, not the seed, of pressed avocados and is rich in heart-healthy
monounsaturated fat. Like sunflower oil, it is ideal for sautéing,
stir-frying, and grilling, according to Kooi, because of its high smoke
point. “It’s also delicious over roasted vegetables and can jazz up a
salad," she says.
Bauer also suggests pumpkin seed oil, a great choice for the holiday
season, and sesame oil, which adds an Asian flavor to cooking. “Oils from nuts
like walnut oil add a bold nutty flavor to cooking," says Bauer.
Final Thoughts on a Heart-Healthy Diet and Cooking Oils
Using vegetable cooking oil works to avoid high cholesterol only when
cooking heart-healthy food. Sautéing hamburgers in sunflower oil won’t do much
to lower your levels. A heart-healthy diet means less red meat and more fish,
poultry, vegetables, fruits, and whole grains.
Bauer’s takeaway? “Less is more when it comes to cooking oils.” They are
dense in calories — about 120 calories per tablespoon. She suggests using an
oil mister when cooking, so you can drizzle on the flavor without using too
much.

The 10 Best Hangover Foods
Have a Hangover-Free New Year
You've decided to ring in 2012 with a cocktail in your hand but want to
avoid the brain-pounding hangover the next morning. (Who doesn't?)
Good news! Enjoying a few drinks this New Year's Eve doesn't mean you're
destined to spend Jan. 1 sloth-like on the couch or hunched over a toilet.
In fact, researchers are finding that your alcoholic choices and what you
eat before, during, and after you drink could drastically reduce your risk
of a morning hangover.
In the event that you do overindulge and find yourself feeling queasy and
awful the morning after, reach for natural hangover food and drinks instead
of the medicine cabinet and you'll be feeling refreshed and back to your
good old self in no time. And remember to choose organic foods when stocking
up on foods to fight hangovers; your night out on the town has already given
your liver enough to process, it shouldn't have to deal with breaking down
toxic pesticides, too.
Asparagus
Eating asparagus before you go out, or while you're drinking, can help
prevent or ease a next-day hangover, according to 2009 research out of
Korea. Scientists found that extracts taken from the leaves and shoots of
asparagus boosted levels of important enzymes that break down alcohol after
heavy drinking. (Maybe bars should start putting this super veggie on the
menu!) A researcher involved with the study says eating asparagus the next
day can help tame hangovers, too.
Whether you choose an asparagus dish or not, be sure to eat before you
drink, warns Aaron White, PhD, director of the Underage and College Drinking
Prevention Research program at the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and
Alcoholism. Eating allows more of the alcohol to break down in the stomach
before your body absorbs it. "Having food in the stomach while drinking
results in a slow trickle of alcohol into the bloodstream versus a rapid
rise when one drinks on an empty stomach," White explains. "This means a
smaller impact on the brain, less of a buildup of toxic byproducts of
alcohol metabolism and, presumably, a more tolerable hangover."
Prickly Pear
This cactus fruit possesses mega anti-inflammatory agents that can help
offset the damage done by drinking alcohol. Researchers at Tulane University
discovered that drinkers who took prickly pear cactus extract 5 hours before
drinking had 50 percent fewer hangover symptoms compared to drinkers who
went without the extract. You can eat prickly pear as a fruit, take an
extract capsule, or drink prickly pear tea to help prevent a hangover.
Clear Liquids, including Cocktails
To prevent a horrible hangover, it's important to focus on clear liquids not
just the day after, but while you're drinking, too. (This includes the
actual cocktail.) Stick with rum, vodka, and gin—spirits lower in
hangover-causing congeners, a fermentation byproduct. Avoid more
congener-rich spirits like brandy, champagne, bourbon, cognac, whiskey, red
wine, and tequila.
Since alcohol blocks the release of vasopressin, a hormone that signals the
kidneys to conserve water, it's easy to become dehydrated while drinking.
White recommends drinking water in between cocktails to stay hydrated and
dilute the alcohol already in your stomach.
The morning after, reach for some clear organic broth to help replace the
salt and potassium lost through drinking.

Coconut Water
Most people are conditioned to reach for a sports drink when they wake up
with a grueling hangover. While those electrolyte-rich drinks do help bring
your body's chemistry back into balance, they often contain nasty
ingredients like fake food dyes that are toxic to brain cells. Worse yet,
some Powerade and Gatorade flavors contain a toxic flame retardant chemical.
Coconut water is a natural electrolyte-boosting option that can help A
ConsumerLab.com analysis released earlier this year found that Zico Natural
Pure Premium Coconut Water contained electrolyte levels on par with
Gatorade, while some other coconut water brands did not live up to the hype.
Pastured Eggs
Eggs provide protein to help stabilize blood sugar, while the cystine in
protein may help break down toxins, according to The Big Doctors Book of
Home Remedies. Look for organic pastured eggs, meaning they come from
hens raised on grass and supplemented with organic feed. This type of egg
can quickly help replenish your body with B vitamins drained from drinking
alcohol.
Bananas
Ever feel physically weak after a night of drinking? You're not imagining
it—your muscles really pay the price when you overdo it in the drinking
department. If you're feeling a little shaky after a night of drinking,
reach for a banana to help restore your body's potassium levels and improve
muscle function.
Crackers & Honey
If you can't stomach eating raw honey the day after drinking, use a
cracker as the delivery system. Real honey is loaded with antioxidants and
concentrated fructose, which will help flush any remaining alcohol out of
your system more quickly.
Quinoa
Quinoa is a South American grain growing in popularity in the states, and
it can also come in mighty handy during a hangover situation. Drinking
depletes your body's amino acids—the building blocks of protein—but quinoa's
well-balanced amino acid profile can help repair the damage done.
Toast
There's something extremely comforting about toast. Whether you're
hugging the porcelain throne due to the flu or a hangover, it seems like
toast is always there to help you get back on your feet. Your liver is also
grateful for a few slices of toast after a night of drinking. Under normal
conditions, your liver automatically produces more glucose from stored carbs
when your blood sugar dips. But when you drink, your liver is busy
metabolizing your alcohol and can't always regulate your blood sugar,
leaving you moody and drained of energy. Toast is also easy on the tummy,
making it a perfect hangover food for queasy mornings.
Tomato Juice
Organic tomato juice can send a natural jolt of vitamins and minerals
into your alcohol-ravaged body, but that's not it's only perk. Tomato juice
hydrates, and just like honey, the fructose in the juice will help flush out
lingering alcohol.
