5 Lessons From the Largest Scientific Study on Women, Ever
The Women’s Health Initiative returned billions of dollars in medical savings, new research shows. Here are the major health lessons the study produced
1. You probably shouldn’t take hormones for longer than you have to. Long-term use of estrogen and progestin increases the risk of breast cancer, heart attack, stroke, and blood clots, though it decreased the risk of hip fractures and colon cancer in the main WHI trial. While these results have caused doctors to largely stop prescribing long-term hormone replacement, individuals are encouraged to make a personal decision based on their own risk factors. For example, if a woman has a very low family history of breast cancer and cardiovascular disease, but a high risk of colon cancer and osteoporosis, she may choose to take the hormones, which are thought to be safe when prescribed for just a short time around menopause, to manage symptoms. They may also extend the life expectancy for women who have had hysterectomies, the data revealed, so be sure to talk to your doctor about your specific needs.
2. Low-fat diets are good, but not enough to reduce your risk of some cancers or cardiovascular disease. The researchers asked some of the participants to eat a low-fat diet, and then compared how this affected their risk of various diseases. They found that a low-fat diet alone was not enough to significantly impact women’s risk of cardiovascular disease, breast cancer, or colorectal cancer, according to the results published in JAMA. The researchers concluded that more dramatic lifestyle changes, including increased exercise, might be necessary to affect risk of developing these diseases.
3. Taking vitamin D and calcium may not be worth it. Some of the women in the study were given calcium and vitamin D supplements, while others were not. The results showed that the supplements did increase the bone density in the hip, but they didn’t significantly decrease the number of hip fractures the women experienced. Nor did taking the supplements lower the risk of colorectal cancer, according to the paper published in the New England Journal of Medicine. They did, however, increase the risk of kidney stones.
4. Ditch diet soda. Post-menopausal women who reported drinking two or more diet sodas per day had a higher risk of heart attack, stroke, and other heart problems, research from the WHI showed. While the researchers couldn’t show a direct connection, there are plenty of other reasons to avoid fake sugar.
5. If you’re at high risk for melanoma, aspirin might help. Researchers analyzed the data from the WHI observational study, and found that women who took aspirin regularly had a 20 percent lower risk of melanoma than women who did not. The correlation was strong — the longer the women took the drug, the lower their risk. Aspirin comes with its own benefits (preventing subsequent heart problems) and harms (increased risk of bleeding), so talk to your doctor before adding it to your routine.

Alcohol and even moderately increases the risk of breast cancer
--the researchers found alcohol consumption even moderately increases the risk of breast cancer and called for women to just one glass of wine a day and who in the history of their families affected by the disease to abstain completely from eating. Art review on research in relation to alcohol in breast cancer that glass one can increase the risk by 5 percent and rises to 50 percent with women taking three or more cups per day. The results of the review means that thousands of cases of breast cancer in Britain, for example, may be caused by excessive alcohol consumption================================================================================
FOODS THAT LAST FOREVER
HONEY
When stored in a sealed container and away from humidity, honey can be stored indefinitely. Honey keeps well because of its low water content. Archeologists have even discovered a jar of well-preserved, liquid honey in ancient Egyptian tombs over 3,300 years old. Over time, the consistency and color of honey can change. An easy fix for crystallized honey is to gently reheat it.
ALCOHOL
Unopened bottles of distilled spirits can last indefinitely with proper storage. Once opened and exposed to some air over time, pure base spirits like vodka, rum and whiskey will not go bad but may change in flavor. Liqueurs contain sugar and other ingredients that can spoil, so watch for signs of crystallization, discoloration or curdling. Cream liqueurs have dairy, cream or egg and only last about 18 months
SALT
Keep salt in a tightly covered container to avoid moisture absorption, and it will last indefinitely. Since salt is a mineral, it cannot spoil
RICE
Raw white rice keeps indefinitely with proper storage. Even polished white rice stored in oxygen-free and cold temperature conditions can stay fresh for up to 30 years! Brown rice, on the other hand, has a short shelf life of 6 to 12 months; its higher oil content causes it to go rancid more quickly. It’s best to keep rice in asealed, airtight container and store in a cool, dry place.
SUGAR
Bacteria does not grow on sugar due to its low moisture content, so properly stored sugar can last forever. If sugar gets damp, it will become hard or lumpy; on the other hand, the evaporation of molasses from brown sugar leaves behind clumps. You can easily fix lumpy sugar by breaking it down with a food processor or heating it in the microwave on low power for one to two minutes per cup.
DRIED BEANS
A B.Y.U. study reveals that more than 80 percent of a consumer taste panel deemed retail-packaged pinto beans up to 30 years old as acceptable for emergency use (samples were stored for years in #10 cans with the oxygen removed). Dried beans can last almost indefinitely in the absence of oxygen and light, but gradual moisture loss will affect its taste and texture. Old beans may need longer soaking and cooking times; try adding acidic ingredients or salt toward the end of the recipe to avoid toughening up the skin.
VINEGAR
Some forms of vinegar can remain intact forever. This is unsurprising since vinegar contains a low pH and is technically a preserved food. Ancient Babylonians were using vinegar before 5000 B.C. as both a condiment and a cleaning agent.
POWDERED MILK
Powdered milk was once a staple of the fallout shelter supply cupboard because of its indefinite shelf life. If fresh milk were unavailable this would be a decent substitute for cooking and baking
RAMEN NOODLES
Ramen noodles are a dorm room staple. They canlast for a decade because the noodles are dried
MAPLE SYRUP
When unopened maple syrup will last forever.
CANNED FOODS
Nowadays we can preserve foods in cans for long stretches of time. These are ideal to keep around in case of an emergency because theylast for over 30 years, but once opened they are at risk of going bad.
PEANUT BUTTER
Kids will be pleased to learn that peanut butter is a very long lasting food. The kinds that do not need to be kept in the fridge stay edible for a year at room temperature because of the oil in the peanut butter, which tends to keep water away.
SOY SAUCE
Unopened soy sauce can last for a very long time. It's a great way to flavor dishes.

Sons cost parents more money in the long run
Parents, listen up: you might love your daughters and sons equally, but
researchers say sons will cost you more money in the long run.
ABC reports, "Researchers say after the age of 18, 41 percent of men need
financial help from their parents compared to only 31 percent of women."
The survey, conducted by Harris Poll for Yodlee Interactive, also found
daughters are less likely to move back into their parents' home and more likely
to lend a hand to aging parents, Time reports.
The Harris Poll also suggests in middle age, or from age 35 to 44, nearly a
third of men are likely to be living with their parents, compared to just 9
percent of women. And if women are living at home, 36 percent of them are taking
care of ailing parents - compared to 16 percent of men who live at home while
caring for their mom or dad. And here's another fact: 35 percent of men living
at home are unemployed, compared with 19 percent of women.
Time also notes the survey found men are twice as likely to admit they don't
provide emotional support for aging parents by doing things such as calling home
and keeping in touch.
Additionally, a Wall Street Journal article reports when adults do move back
home, it runs their parents around $8,000 to $18,000 a year, depending on
whether the parents pay for extras such as entertainment.
Some argue women might be conditioned to receive less financial support from
parents. Time cites aUniversity of Michigan study that found that boys are 15
percent more likely to get higher allowances for doing household chores than
girls who are the same age.
But a writer for the Wall St. Cheat Sheet says it's not so easy to determine
whether it's more expensive to raise boys or girls. She says the answer changes
depending on whom you ask.
For example, she points to research by the personal finance website
lovemoney.com, which says it costs more to raise girls because they have more
expensive hobbies and clothing.
However, The Telegraph says boys are more likely to cost more because they wear
out clothing and other items faster than girls do. The outlet cites a report
from Halifax Bank.
Either way, the U.S. Department of Agriculture estimated that a child born in
2012 will cost his or her parents more than $241,000 in the first 17 years of
life. But you can't put a price on love, right?
